Everything you Need to Know about Vacuuming

Vacuuming is a familiar chore to everyone but not many people are aware of why vacuuming is so important or how often they should vacuum or how often they should clean and empty their vacuum.

Importance of vacuuming

When people avoid vacuuming it allows dirt to settle in the carpet and allows allergens to quickly build up. Vacuuming regularly takes dirt from the surface of the carpet but if it is left for too long, the only way to get the dirt out of the carpet is to hire professional carpet cleaners to shampoo your carpets which is much more expensive than making a few passes with your vacuum. Pets, kids, shoes, and just about everything else pushes allergens into carpets and if vacuuming is not performed regularly, these allergens will rise into the air each time you step on your floor making your day miserable and leaving you blowing your nose all day long.

When to clean your vacuum

Dirty vacuums greatly reduce suction and will pull up less dirt from your carpets than it should which is why it is important to stay up to date with cleaning your vacuum. If the brushes on the bottom of your vacuum are full of hair, string, or anything else it will not be able to effectively clean your floors and you will have to spend some time cleaning the roller brushes. It is best to clean vacuums outside because dust and dirt can go flying through the air even if you are being very careful. For bagless vacuums, it is best to empty the vacuum after each use because although it may not look like you vacuumed much up after just one use, any dirt inside the vacuum can affect the performance of the vacuum. For vacuums with bags, it is best to replace the bag when the bag is about half, to two thirds of the way full which may seem wasteful but it can prolong the life of you vacuum motor and increase suction throughout the life of the vacuum. Regardless if you have a bagless vacuum or a vacuum with a bag, you will have to replace or clean the filters. This should be done every 6-12 months depending on how often you vacuum and how bad your allergies are. Many vacuum filters can be cleaned simply by getting rinsed with water but to be sure, read your owner’s manual. Make sure the filter is completely dry before placing it back in your vacuum. Generally, it is best to allow 24-48 hours for your filter to air dry. For the best way to clean your vacuum, consult your owner’s manual to ensure you are giving your vacuum the very best clean.

How often should you vacuum

Homes should be vacuumed at least once per week and high traffic areas such as hallways should be vacuumed at least twice per week. Some would recommend vacuuming once per week for every heart that is living in your home. For example, if there are 2 adults, 2 children, and one pet you would vacuum 5 times per week. Although vacuuming more will lead to cleaner carpets many people do not have the time to vacuum 5 or 6 days per week but vacuuming the entire home once per week and vacuuming high traffic areas twice per week will be good enough for most homes.
