Bed Cleaning Recommendations

Bed Cleaning Recommendations

Each night we go to bed completely unaware we are sleeping with several pounds of dead skin in our mattresses. Some of this can be prevented by taking care of your bed as much as it cares for you.

Many people will go months on end without throwing their sheets and pillowcase in the washing machine. This is a serious problem because bacteria in the bed has the potential to make your skin break out with rashes and other skin conditions. With each person losing hundreds of thousands of dead skin cells every night, mattresses and bedding can get really gross. It is recommended to wash sheets once per week or at the very least once every other week. A problem many people have is remembering to do this so think of a weekly activity you have and plan your cleaning around that. For example, before going to church, grocery shopping, or even as soon as you get off work on Friday throw a load of sheets in the washing machine to keep your bed happy and healthy.

Pillow cases should be washed at least once per week due to the oil, dirt, and grease from your head not to mention some saliva for those who may drool at night. Even if you shower right before bed you should maintain these healthy bed cleaning habits. Pillows should be washed about once every 2-6 months and replaced after every 2 to 3 years.

Wash your duvet or comforter every 4 to 6 months for proper hygiene. Duvet covers can be washed monthly to keep the duvet cleaner and smelling great. If you have a mattress pad, they can be cleaned every 4-6 months also.

Many mattresses can be steam cleaned every 3-6 months but be sure to allow several hours for the mattress to dry before placing fresh sheets on. Steaming the sheets will kill dust mites, bacteria, and other unwanted guests that may be living in your mattress.

For proper care instructions for all of your bedding read the washing tags.
